Moving forwards with “Freight Flow Coalitions”

InnoWaTr is a sustainability and innovation project funded by the EU. The aim of InnoWaTr is to promote inland shipping with the help of cooperative “Freight Flow Coalitions” (FFC) and thus make faster progress in achieving the modal shift, i.e. moving traffic from road to inland waterways. The Middle Weser is of particular interest to our ports in this connection. 25 project teams made up of scientific and business stakeholders from the public and private sectors in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany have now joined forces to achieve that target.

The project focuses on testing eight inland waterway experiments in real environments with cooperating regional FFCs. Regional experiments include pilot testing an urban shuttle supply system for the retail trade in the Übersee district of Hamburg’s HafenCity, as well as establishing a barge container line between Bremerhaven and Hamburg. Amongst other things, this is intended to promote the use of autonomous or remote-controlled ship units in the participating regions and using digital twins to make inland shipping more attractive.

One of the tasks entrusted to bremenports GmbH & Co. KG involves creating a playbook which will document the project findings and thus help local authorities as well as providers of maritime infrastructure and logistics services to conduct similar pilot projects with their own customers in their own regions.

The 3.45-million euro project will be co-funded by the European Union as part of the EU Interreg North Sea Region 2021 – 2027 programme (European Regional Development Fund).
