Our sustainability strategy
The sustainability strategy of the ports of Bremen is aimed at developing economic, ecological and socially responsible policies that will ensure the future viability of the ports. It concerns primarily the management of the ports by bremenports GmbH & Co. KG and the public port infrastructure (Bremen’s special assets in the port area), but also addresses the entire port areas in Bremen and Bremerhaven as well as the relevant transport and supply chains, where it seeks to win supporters and partners who will cooperate in developing a sustainable economy that will strengthen the entire port and economic location.
Sustainability
We are sustainable
Our business activities are influenced by highly diverse social trends: changing and increasing goods flows, digitisation, climate change, shortage of skilled labour etc. That was what prompted bremenports to decide back in 2009 to pursue sustainability as a central corporate objective, the first port management company in Germany to do so. The sustainability strategy of the ports of Bremen is intended to develop economic, ecological and socially responsible strategies to safeguard the future viability of the ports. While it refers primarily to port management by bremenports GmbH & Co. KG and the public port infrastructure (Bremen’s special assets in the port area), it also impacts on the entire port areas in Bremen and Bremerhaven as well as the relevant transport and supply chains, where it aims to find supporters and partners to cooperate in developing a sustainable economy aimed at strengthening the entire port and economic location.
Sustainability activities
In five areas of action: Market presence & port development, Climate protection, Environmental management and Social responsibility.
The policies defined for each area of action, and the links between all these topics with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) make up the core of our Sustainability Management. In consultation with the specialist departments, we plan measures and projects which will help achieve our sustainability objectives. These goals, measures and projects are part of a portfolio of measures which are implemented by our staff within the context of their individual remits. They involve measures for sustainable procurement, energy efficiency, reducing our carbon emissions, creating incentives for marine shipping to become more eco-friendly - in other words, they are all about using the planet’s natural resources in such a way as to conserve them for future generations. .
- Sustainability
We regard sustainability management as a continuous improvement process and aim to safeguard the future viability of the ports of Bremen by means of economic, environmentally compatible and socially responsible development and thus make a contribution towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Accordingly, we engage in projects and networks in order to identify, promote and implement innovative technologies and processes for ports and shipping in consultation with our stakeholders.
- Market presence & port development
We invest in innovative and pioneering projects to preserve and enhance the competitiveness of the ports of Bremen. In that respect, we bear in mind that the future viability of our infrastructure has to be ensured under the conditions of climate change and consequently observe the requirements that apply to each individual location regarding water and nature conservation, efficient use of resources, land consumption and social aspects.
- Climate protection
Our goal is to make the port climate-neutral. To do so, we aim to achieve GHG-neutral infrastructure by the year 2023. This involves raising energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy in respect of our heat generation plant, company fleet and service vessels. Together with the relevant actors, we aim to achieve GHG neutrality at the port location by the year 2035.
- Environmental management
Our goal is to avoid negative impact on the environment by the ports of Bremen or to keep such impact to a minimum. The PERS Environmental Management System, which was developed by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) especially for the requirements of the ports, ensures the continuous improvement of the environmental performance of the various port actors and promotes the successful future development of the ports of Bremen.
- Social responsibilityThe port management company promotes employee satisfaction and its attractiveness as employer by offering job security, comprehensive employee rights and a family-friendly corporate culture which promotes health and skills. We also endorse good working conditions at the port and in marine shipping, encourage a frank and fair exchange of opinions with the local population and are actively involved in specific projects.
Our holistic sustainability strategy
Our day-to-day business activities are all geared towards strengthening the three cornerstones of our sustainability strategy: cost effectiveness, ecology and social responsibility. This protects our environment and safeguards the future viability of the ports of Bremen. First and foremost, the greenports strategy applies to port management by bremenports GmbH & Co. KG and the public port infrastructure; in some areas, however, it also affects the entire port district including the corresponding transport and value chains. We are constantly looking for partners and supporters who can help us achieve a sustainable economy with the common goal of making our locations even better – and even greener.
