bremenports is seeking interested parties and ideas for a unique port property
This is likely to be a unique opportunity for the port of Bremerhaven in the coming years: bremenports GmbH & Co. KG is conducting a market survey on behalf of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen for a plot of land measuring around seven hectares directly in the overseas port area of Bremerhaven.
The property, which will be available from January 2026, offers direct access to the water. This opens up a wide range of possible uses and ideal conditions – especially for port-specific commercial enterprises and uses. The immediate proximity to water and the excellent connections to international maritime transport routes and inland waterways make the property an ideal location for future-oriented port projects. The aim of the market survey is to determine the entrepreneurial interest in the long-term use of this valuable area. This is not a competition or a direct contract award, but rather a collection of innovative concepts that will strengthen the port location in the long term. These expressions of interest can then serve as a basis for a later tender.
Initial considerations for the subsequent use of the site already exist, including:
- Tank farm operation: Possible use as a specialized tank farm for hydrogen and hydrogen-based derivatives, including water-side transshipment.
- Break bulk transshipment: Construction of a break bulk terminal for the import and export of general cargo via the Columbus Quay.
- Cruise shipping: Use to support the existing cruise terminal and improve connections to the city center.
- Offshore operations & maintenance: Development of a hub for offshore service concepts with regular ship calls.
In addition, a wide range of other port-specific uses are also conceivable. Interested parties are therefore cordially invited to submit their own concepts.
The site, which is currently primarily occupied by a logistics center with an adjacent, smaller office building, is strategically located at the southern end of Columbus Island, directly in the overseas port area of Bremerhaven, one of Europe's most important port locations. Around 65 million tons of various goods are handled here every year, including up to 5 million containers, around 1.5 million cars, as well as fresh produce and general cargo. In addition, around 300,000 passengers are handled annually at the neighboring cruise terminal. In addition to its direct proximity to water, the location is characterized by excellent connections to international maritime routes, inland waterways, and the road network.
“Such a large area with access to quay facilities is likely to be very rare in Germany. This is precisely why we decided to conduct a market exploration process: we want to give port-related businesses in particular the opportunity to help shape the future of this unique port location,” says Robert Howe, Managing Director of bremenports, explaining the background to the market exploration process that has now been launched.
Companies interested in using the space are therefore invited to submit a rough outline of their usage concept with immediate effect. The property brochure and further information on participating in the market exploration process can be found here.
