New category "Gateways to the World" celebrates its premiere with bremenports as a partner
Not only the ports of Bremen are absolutely made for the movies – around the world, the "gateways to the world" are special places, somewhere between longing, homesickness, globalization, and international connection. For the economy, they have always played a large role – now they also play this role for the Bremen Film Festival: This year, for the first time, a new competition category will be announced in partnership with the port management company bremenports, under the title: "Gateways to the World – The Power of Ports" which is dedicated to ports and tells the fascinating stories and people behind the gates to the world.
“Ports are much more than just docking points – they are places of departure, encounter, and change,” explains Robert Howe, Managing Director of bremenports. “The ports of Bremen are the backbone of our economy and provide good jobs for tens of thousands of people. We at bremenports fully support the new category with great conviction and are very pleased that the Film Festival is giving ports a stage and putting them in the spotlight.”
As part of the new competition category focused on ports, viewers can expect films that show these significant locations in a new light – as metaphors for transitions, desires, and challenges. From documentary portraits to dramatic narratives and visual poems, the ports become the starting point for captivating film art.
The award ceremony for the new category will take place on March 23, 2025, at 10 a.m. in the Kleines Haus at Theater Bremen. The jury consists of Ilona Rieke, Co-Managing Director of Filmbüro Bremen and Artistic Director of Filmfest Bremen, Bremen’s State Secretary for Ports, Kai Stührenberg, and Ronald Schwarze, who is responsible for location marketing for the ports of Bremen at bremenports.
The best feature film and the best short film will be honored – further information about the new category, the total of five nominated films, and their screening times as part of the film festival can be found here: https://www.filmfestbremen.com/competitions/wettbewerb-gateways-to-the-world/
